Source: Office for National Statistics, Inter-Departmental Business Register: workplaces classed as public houses and bars (SIC 2007 class 56.30), counts rounded to the nearest 5, on today's council boundaries (April 2023) for every year, with older figures added up for councils that have since merged. Pubs and bars are counted together. 2001 to 2019 from the ONS "Economies of ale" tables; 2020 to 2026 from UK Business Counts on Nomis, counted each March (same register; totals agree with ONS to within rounding). From 2020 the size split is linked to the ONS definition at 2019. Owner-run means sole traders and partnerships; company-run means any limited company, which includes chains but also independent landlords who have incorporated. Available from 2010.
